The island of Ureparapara is an extinct stratovolcano whose summit culminates at 764 m part of the Banks Torba Islands.
The island has an unusual shape with steep promontories at the entrance to a spectacular 3 km long port, formed by a crater.
The volcano was built through successive pyroclastic eruptions and streams of lava.
Its last eruption dates back 476,000 years.
